Despite the fact that we roughly follow our neighbouring countries when it comes to internet speeds, there is still a lot of room for improvement in Denmark.

It's paradoxical that many households and businesses are still struggling with both network coverage on phones and internet speeds, when a small "patch" in North Jutland, for a period, has had the country's and even The world's fastest Broadband.

The town is called Tranum.

It was the businessman Per Lorentzen who initiated the initiative to improve the Online infrastructure in the town. Tranum is an ordinary little village, like many others in North Jutland.

Tranum is home to just 400 people, and the town is not characterised by a business community. Nevertheless, the purpose of Per Lorentzen's initiative was to ensure that businesses could also thrive in Tranum.

The initiative brought Tranum to the top of the broadband speed rankings. To this day, Tranum still has the fastest broadband in the country.

Denmark has a lot to learn from Tranum. Not only can residents stream and download at their own convenience with that internet speed. Per Lorentzen's initiative has been a catalyst for several young people in Tranum to start their own business.

Onlime benefits from fast fibre network

Onlime, is one of those companies. We grew up in Tranum and were inspired by the lightning-fast internet. It's a perfect test environment for our platform and pretty much every aspect of our service, such as backup and synchronisationit makes perfect sense on high-speed internet.

The internet in Tranum measured speeds of 1 Gb/s already in 2011. In comparison, the highest speed you can buy in 2015 in the rest of Denmark is 500 Mbit/s, which after over 4 years is still only half as fast as the internet in a town with 400 inhabitants in North Jutland.

Denmark may well be the best country in Europe and 3rd best in the world for companiesBut we still have a lot to learn, even from a small town in Northern Jutland.

When you look at Danish internet connections and compare them to the other Nordic countries, Denmark is behind, but still reasonably well placed. The Netherlands, Finland and the perennial laggard, Sweden, are all ranked better than Denmark.

Sweden has always been, if not world champions, then world class in internet speeds.

Sweden's fast internet is often associated with entrepreneurship, and this is probably not unfounded. Companies like Spotify and Skype and many other successful internet companies have started in Sweden. A good internet connection should start to be seen as just as important for businesses as normal infrastructure.

The best country in Europe for business

Now internet speed is not the only parameter for running a business. Just this week, Denmark has been named Europe's best country to do business in. In the international rankings, Denmark is ranked number 3, only surpassed by Singapore and New Zealand.

This is the result of the World Bank's annual "Doing Business" report, which examines the business climate around the world. This report concludes that Denmark is placed very favourably.

In particular, it is Denmark's ease of starting a business online that has been praised.

Other parameters measured included: ease of starting a business, obtaining building permits, access to electricity, property registration, credit, tax collection and trade restrictions.
